The Plant-Based Community Fridge at Essex Market

The Essex Street Market Vendor Association and local community organization Artists Athletes Activists have partnered to bring a plant-based community fridge to Essex Market. Located at 220 Broome Street, this fridge is accessible to everyone 24/7.

WHAT CAN WE ACCEPT?

Some examples of foods we would love to see stocked in the community fridge include:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables

  • Whole grain products

  • Canned goods (ex: beans, corn, mixed vegetables)

  • Dried packaged goods (ex: beans, lentils, black eyed peas)

  • Grains (ex: rice, pasta, quinoa)

This is a plant-based fridge, and as such we cannot accept foods that contain meat, dairy or eggs.

If you are looking to donate foods that are not vegan you can find a directory of other community fridges in the neighborhood here.

HOW DO WE KEEP THE FRIDGE FULL?

  1. Artists Athletes Activists is a 501c(3) that accepts monetary donations. Funds are used to purchase food when product donations are running low. You can donate here.

  2. Businesses and suppliers donate bulk products, and local grocers and farmers donate unsellable “ugly” produce. Community members like you can also drop off plant-based foods!

  3. Plant-based restaurants and food brands donate pre-approved packaged meals.
